Improve understanding of the UK’s university funding landscape – join our virtual study group

In partnership with the Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS) and the Newton Gateway to Mathematics, we are inviting members to take part in a three-day virtual study group on Higher Education Funding from 12–14 November 2025.

Universities across the UK are under growing financial pressure. Falling per-student funding, rising costs and declining international enrolments have created a challenging environment, with a growing number of institutions facing serious financial strain.

The study group will bring together experts from mathematics, data science and related disciplines to explore what the data can tell us about the sustainability of the current model and to test alternative ways of financing universities.

Participants will hear from university leaders and policy specialists before working in teams to analyse live data and model key aspects of the HE system. Possible questions include:

  • Is the current funding model for UK universities sustainable? What are the possible impacts of changes, such as fee increases?

  • How do flows of money, people and knowledge shape the sector’s long-term resilience?

  • What can we learn from funding models in other industrialised nations?

  • What is the value proposition of a degree – for the state, the private sector and the individual?

This event offers members a chance to apply statistical and analytical skills to a real-world policy challenge, contribute to practical recommendations and connect with colleagues across the wider mathematical sciences community. The aim is for the outputs from the study group to be used to inform public debate and decisions around higher education funding.

The study group is a pro bono collaboration between the RSS, V-KEMS and the Newton Gateway to Mathematics. It will run online via Zoom and is open to all, though places are limited.

Register now to take part and help shape the evidence base for the future of UK higher education.
