RSS 2020 invited sessions range from AI to Florence Nightingale

The organisers of this September’s RSS International Conference in Bournemouth have revealed the line-up of invited topic sessions that will appear on the programme.

There will be over 60 sessions spread over 10 different topic streams, organised by the Society’s sections and special interest groups, individual fellows and several external organisations including the ONS Data Science Campus, National Centre for Statistical Ecology and the Water Research Centre.

Confirmed topics include:

  • Mind the gap: Causation in law versus statistics
  • New developments in business statistics methodology
  • Statistics, communication, impact: The Florence Nightingales of today
  • Joy of teaching statistics to non-specialists
  • Ethics and bias in data science
  • Spot the criminal: Predictive policing
  • Artificial intelligence - or is it?
  • Latent class analysis, concept, applications and challenges
  • Addressing statistical and epidemiological issues in global health
  • Controversies in variables and features selection: What should we be doing?
  • Representing and quantifying uncertainty in complex systems
  • Statistics and measurement science
  • Bayesian demography
  • Working together to improve migration statistics
  • The Sustainable Development Goals: What have we learned five years on?
  • Data quality in probability-based online panels
  • Measurement error in the social sciences: estimation and correction

There are also 12 professional development workshops scheduled with topics including:

  • A statistician's guide to influencing parliament
  • Reviewing for a clinical journal
  • How to develop your 'so what' message
  • Statistical consultancy: Advice for going it alone
  • RSS Professional Pathways: How professionalism can help your career
