The RSS is looking for new members to serve on its Council from 1 January 2021. Council members play an intrinsic role in the Society; they are its trustees and are responsible for governing the society and its finances. Tenureship is normally four years.
The current list of RSS Council members can be found on our main website (PDF). At the end of the 2020 session, these seven Ordinary Members will retire from Council:

- Arnoldo Frigessi
- Claire Gormley
- Lisa Hampson
- Andy Sutherland
- Phil Woodward
We are keen to receive members' suggestions of people who would make effective Council members, and to hear from those who would like to put themselves forward.
The RSS needs trustees who are committed to the Society, help to develop the strategy, and make sure the Society is acting prudently with its resources. We look for people who will offer constructive opinions and are willing to take on the responsibility of oversight of a charity. We also look for those willing to make the time commitment and get involved, be financially responsible and committed to the public understanding of statistics.
Council meets three times a year for four hours in London and members generally take on another role, such as a Council representative on a section, which can mean a few more committee meetings a year, in person or by teleconference.
Suggestions should be accompanied by a short account of ways in which the individual might contribute to Council and the society together with information about their areas of work/expertise and their contact details.
Council is keen to be diverse, including in terms of type of statistical specialism, sector of employment (academic, public sector, private sector, etc), age, gender and ethnicity. In particular, we would be pleased to receive suggestions of fellows who might increase representation in the following areas:
- Those employed in the private sector
- Locations outside of London
- Fellows working in or with the media, with fundraising experience, and with strong external networks.

At a meeting this spring, Council will nominate nine candidates to participate in the 2020 ballot for seven new members of Council. After this there will be an opportunity for any four fellows to formally nominate a fellow for election. More information on how to do this will be communicated in due course.
