Are you interested in ethical debate and health and social care research?
The Health Research Authority (HRA) is looking for statisticians who are passionate about health and social care research to join their Research Ethics Committees (REC). If you can analyse complex issues, take an objective stance and voice your opinion then this could be the perfect volunteering opportunity for you.
The work of HRA committees
As a member with an expertise in statistics, the HRA would welcome your assessment of the statistical design of research studies. You would also join in with the overall ethical review of research applications to ensure the safety and wellbeing of research participants and the public. Training on research ethics and the legal framework surrounding research is provided.
As a member, you will need to commit to attend at least six full REC meetings per year plus some additional sub-committee business in between meetings. There are 65 committees across England, so they will be able find you a meeting that is local to you. Travel will be reimbursed.
Who should consider applying
HRA is keen to receive applications from people with a background in statistics who have an interest in health research and ethics.
As a REC member you will gain:
- a better understanding of research ethics and relevant legislation
- committee skills: summarising, debating, evaluating and decision making
- access to HRA member training events
- the opportunity to train for the role of a REC Chair / Vice Chair after one year of membership.
