Applications are open now for the Royal Statistical Society William Guy Lecturer 2018-2019.
The William Guy Lecturer is a prestigious volunteer role, and is intended to recognise fellows with a track record in undertaking school outreach activities. The RSS William Guy Lecturer is given support by the RSS to deliver lectures to school students in the UK in the academic year 2018-2019.
Fellows with passion, enthusiasm and experience in engaging school-aged students and teachers with statistical topics are invited to apply. We welcome applications from Fellows from across the UK statistical community. Past lecturers have been drawn from industry, education and academia, and have lectured on a wide variety of topics.
To apply, please return the s.keir@rss.org.uk by noon on Monday 12 March 2018. Note that only the form and the CV will be forwarded to the selection panel. The selection panel requests that the CV should prioritise public engagement and outreach activities over academic publications or detailed work histories. We intend to inform applicants by Monday 30 April 2018.
Selection criteria
Selection will be made by a sub-group of the RSS Education Committee. The selection criteria used by the sub-group will include:

The individual must be a fellow, graduate statistician (GradStat) or chartered statistician (CStat) of the RSS. e-student and e-teacher members are not eligible to apply.

The individual must be based in the United Kingdom.

The role of the RSS William Guy Lecturer

The role of the Royal Statistical Society William Guy Lecturer is voluntary.

The recipient has the title of the 'Royal Statistical Society William Guy Lecturer'. The lecturer receives a certificate in recognition of their appointment.

One Royal Statistical Society William Guy Lecturer will usually be appointed for each academic year. This call for applications is for an appointment for the academic year from 1 August 2018 – 31 July 2019.

The recipient may draw on up to £1,000 of expenses from the RSS during their academic year of appointment, for costs incurred in the development and delivery of their 'RSS William Guy Lecture' to schools and school-age students. Claim of travel and other out-of-pocket expenses will be subject to firstly providing a brief report of activity undertaken to the RSS office, and secondly complying with RSS travel expense guidelines. Claim of development costs must be made by prior agreement with the RSS office.

The William Guy Lecturer should welcome approaches from RSS local groups and schools in the UK for school outreach activities. The William Guy Lecturer is expected to deliver several 'RSS William Guy Lectures' to school pupils in the course of their academic year of appointment. The RSS wishes to ensure access to the lectures to a wide and diverse school population. Previous lecturers have typically delivered 8-12 lectures per year.

We ask each Royal Statistical Society William Guy Lecturer to participate in one or more activities to share their expertise with fellows. Participation in the activity will be by agreement with the RSS office, with travel and/or other out-of-pocket expenses paid. An activity could include delivering a workshop for Fellows on good practice in engaging with schools (organised by the RSS office), or sharing material produced for work with schools with fellows.

A condition of receipt of the title is that they register as a STEM Ambassador if they are not already registered. This process requires individuals to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly Criminal Records Bureau) check or a Disclosure Scotland Protecting Vulnerable Groups check. Registration with the STEM Ambassador programme carries no extra cost or commitment over and above their appointment of being a William Guy Lecturer.

William Guy Lecturers should be willing to be included in a pool of previous William Guy Lecturers and/or a public list of speakers for schools, and be receptive to requests for participating in school outreach activities beyond the period of their appointment as that academic year’s lecturer.
