Future Leader profile: Dilum Dissanayake
Position: Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham.
I wanted to be an academic from the beginning. I believe it was because my parents were teachers. So, I decided to continue my education to the doctoral level before I started looking for careers in academia. I have loved mathematics and statistics since childhood. That never changed over time. I always wanted to learn new things.
Leadership philosophy: A leader is someone who can influence/motivate others to work to their full potential.
Motivations as a Future Leader: To support others who want to excel in their careers and learn something new at the same time.
Proudest career moments: Achieving a doctoral degree; seeing my postgraduate students winning awards and prizes; achieving the title, "Remarkable woman in transport" in 2022 (TUMI Award)
Role model: Professor Margaret Bell, Professor of Transport and the Environment.
Margaret was my mentor from 2009 to 2012. I learnt a lot from observing how she handles difficult situations in a systematic way, how she approaches a certain problem. I naturally started following her way of doing things and have been lucky to find someone like her to work with very closely.
Advice to young statisticians: Select a career that you enjoy doing, not because it brings income but also because you treat it as a hobby
Hobbies: Gardening, cooking, shopping, travelling.
