As I look forward to the start of summer and see all the amazing work going on at the RSS, I'm constantly impressed by the work of our members in pushing for improvements in data-based decision making while also supporting the wider community of data professionals. I’d encourage you to read Paul Allin’s thoughtful blog reflecting on our work around the recent scrutiny of the UK official statistics system – a timely and balanced perspective on our role in supporting our members working in the UK’s statistical system and promoting our vision for data at the heart of decision-making.
The programme for our 2025 conference in Edinburgh is now live. We’re thrilled to announce Baroness Alex Freeman as this year’s Campion Lecturer – an exciting addition to what promises to be a dynamic and forward-thinking event.
We’re also pleased to open nominations for our 2026 honours and prizes. These awards are a key way we recognise excellence and impact across the statistical community. One such exceptional practitioner has just been announced as the winner of the 8th Mardia Prize: Dr Eleni Elia, who will be running a series of interdisciplinary workshops on migration statistics.
Finally, our Statisticians for Society initiative, connecting RSS members with charities in need of statistical expertise, is on the lookout for more organisations that could use expert advice. If you know of an organisation that could benefit, we’d love to hear from you.
Best wishes,
Rich Pugh, Honorary Officer for Membership
