The RSS Manchester local group will host an online seminar with Professor Arkadiusz Wiśniowski who is a Professor of Social Statistics and Demography in the Department of Social Statistics, University of Manchester. This talk will focus on how Bayesian hierarchical models can be used to integrate data from traditional and digital trace sources to estimate detailed characteristics of the three components of population change: mortality, fertility, and migration
Demographic data are needed to understand how populations change over time and across countries, regions, and local areas. Such data are essential for assessing demand for education, pensions, health and social care services, and housing; understanding and managing labour markets; planning urban and infrastructure development; and designing migration and integration policies. However, detailed data disaggregated by age, sex, education, and other characteristics are rarely available beyond a limited number of developed economies. In this talk, Professor Arkadiusz Wiśniowski will demonstrate how Bayesian hierarchical models can be used to integrate data from traditional and digital trace sources to estimate detailed characteristics of the three components of population change: mortality, fertility, and migration.
