We’re pleased to announce that the RSS Council have approved the appointment of two new editors for our journals,
JRSS: Series A (Statistics in Society) and
JRSS: Series B (Statistical Methodology). Our sincere congratulations go to Elizabeth Williamson and Rajen D. Shah on being chosen for the roles, which begin at the start of 2027.
With Michael Elliot's tenure as editor of
Series A coming to an end at the close of 2026, Elizabeth ‘Fizz’ Williamson will be taking up the post for her term of four years. A London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) biostatistician with nearly 20 years working in academic health research, Fizz works on optimising electronic health records data for health research. She worked on the OpenSAFELY collaborative during the Covid period, contributing to a number of urgent health related solutions throughout the pandemic. Her methodological interests have since broadened to encompass statistical challenges of both causal analyses and risk prediction using data from electronic health records.
Her academic background includes a bachelors’ in mathematics from King's College Cambridge, a masters’ degree in Medical Statistics from the University of Leicester and a PhD from LSHTM.
“I’m very excited to be appointed as a Joint Editor of the JRSS: Series A. I’m joining an incredible team and I’m pleased to have an opportunity to contribute to the great work they have been doing. I’m particularly looking forward to having a broader view of the scope and depth of research being undertaken in this area and working with Prof Nikos Tzavidis to help shape the journal over the next few years.”
Over at
Series B, Hani Doss is nearing the end of his term as co-editor, and will be replaced by Rajen D. Shah, who is returning to the journal having served as an editor until 2020. Rajen is a Professor of Statistics at the University of Cambridge. His main research interests include developing methodology and theory for problems in high-dimensional and semiparametric statistics, and causal inference.

In 2017, he was awarded our David Cox Research Prize for his fantastic work in the area, and following sustained excellence in his field, he received the Guy Medal in Bronze in 2022. He was also elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2025, and has previously served as an editor for
The Annals of Statistics and
Biometrika as well as his previous role with
Series B.
“It is a great privilege to take on the role of co-editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series B. JRSSB has long been at the forefront of statistical methodology and theory, shaping how we draw inferences and make decisions in a data-driven world. As the journal that published my first paper, it also holds a place of special significance for me. Today, with the rapid rise of AI across all fields of inquiry, rigorous peer review is more vital than ever to maintaining the integrity and quality of scientific research. I look forward to working with my co-editors and the editorial team to build on the journal’s legacy and help shape the next generation of statistical methodology and theory.”
Our sincere thanks go to Hani and Michael for their contribution to the journals over the last few years. We look forward to working with Rajen and Fizz to ensure the legacy of RSS journals continues to grow and adapt to an increasingly data-driven world.
