The inaugural International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science was celebrated on 11 October. We were delighted to support this event, and our honorary officer for equality, diversity and inclusion, Dr Eugenie Hunsicker, joined the celebration with this video:
The associated “around the world” conference was a great success gathering 205 statisticians and data scientists from 36 countries of which 55% were academics, 17% students, 10% worked in non-profit organisations or other, 9% were business or industry workers, and a final 9% worked in government.
A fascinating selection of sessions included a wide range of topics from work-life balance, gender issues in statistics and Covid-19 studies. Lively discussions followed the talks and raised common worries and challenges faced by women in the field.
Our Young Statisticians Section organised a joint session with the Career-young Statisticians Section of the Irish Statistical Association, with speaker Professor Norma Bargary from the University of Limerick, also one of the Society’s statistical ambassadors, giving an overview of functional data analysis and its applications to sports analytics. A recording of this session will be made available together with other sessions on the
Caucus’ YouTube channel.
Slide details from Prof. Norma Bargary’s talk on functional data analysis in sports analytics.
A special issue of
Significance magazine was published, guest edited by Altea Lorenzo-Arribas and Sandra Alba. Free-to-read in honour of the day, it focuses on female statisticians and data scientists.
The organising committee would like to thank all contributors and supporting organisations, and invites future volunteers to join the 2023 committee by emailing
