We are delighted to announce a new editor for our Series B Journal. Professor Qiwei Yao, currently professor of statistics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), will take up the role in January 2022 for three years. He joins Aurore Delaigle and Steffen Lauritzen. He succeeds Simon Wood, who completes his term at the end of December 2021.
Professor Yao has held a Chair in Statistics at the LSE since 2002. He was head of department from 2006 to 2009 and has outstanding editorial experience, having been co-editor in chief for four other journals in the past, as well as associate editor for nine journals, one of which is JRSS-B.
He was awarded a PhD in Statistics from Wuhan University, Wuhan, China in 1987 and worked at Southeast University, Nanjing, China before moving to the University of Freiburg, then to the University of Kent at Canterbury and finally to the LSE in 2000. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and of the American Statistical Association and was awarded the International Chinese Statistical Association Outstanding service Award in 2015. He also held the Saw Swee Hock Professorship of Statistics (2020) at the National University of Singapore.
In addition to his exceptional level of leadership and service, Professor Yao is extremely responsive to modern developments in statistics and has a good appreciation of modern data science in general, including machine learning. His current research interests include time series analysis; high-dimensional time series modelling and forecasting; dimension reduction and factor modelling; dynamical network modelling; spatio temporal modelling; financial econometrics; nonparametric regression.
