The RSS Emerging Applications PhD competition will be open to students who have defended a PhD thesis in statistics in the last two years. The winner of the competition will be given the opportunity to speak at an RSS Emerging Applications Section workshop on a topic of their choice.
Criteria:
To be eligible for the award, candidates should have completed a PhD at a UK university. The PhD defence should have taken place between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2024. Applications will be judged on the contribution of their PhD thesis to an emerging application of statistics and its potential for long term impact on the field of statistics.
How to apply and deadline:
To apply for the prize, candidates should submit:
- An electronic copy of the final version of the thesis.
- A supporting letter (max 2 pages) from a referee who has a good knowledge of the thesis. This might be the PhD advisor, collaborator or external examiner.
- A cover letter (max 2 pages) written by the candidate, providing a lay summary of their thesis and its main contributions to the emerging application.
Candidates should also confirm the date of the defence of the thesis. Submissions must be received by
noon on the
30 March 2025. All documents, including supporting letters, should be emailed to
r.g.seymour@bham.ac.uk with the subject title RSS Emerging Applications PhD Prize.
Eligibility:
- The PhD must have taken place at UK university.
- The candidate must have taken their viva voce between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2024.

r.g.seymour@bham.ac.uk. Note that candidates need not be members of the RSS in order to be considered for the prize.
Prize:
The recipient of the award will receive a certificate. To disseminate and foster their area of research, the recipient of the award will be invited to speak at a workshop of the RSS Emerging Applications Section.
Result:
The winning candidate will be chosen from eligible submissions by the committee of the Emerging Applications Section. The decision of the committee is final. The winner of the competition will be announced around the end of May 2025. The winner will be notified by the committee and will be announced on the RSS website.
