Celebrating Diversity Special Interest Group (SIG) – Call for Members

The Society is seeking volunteers to join the committee of a newly-proposed special interest group: Celebrating Diversity.

Celebrating Diversity Special Interest Group (SIG) will focus on promoting engagement from the wider membership and create a supportive community of statisticians and data scientists who may have typically been underrepresented in the past.

Celebrating Diversity SIG plans on organising a diverse programme of accessible events such as talks, networking events, and professional activities (e.g. Wikipedia edit-a-thons) to inform, connect, share and ultimately support the professional growth of everyone in our diverse community of statisticians and data scientists. Events will be both face-to-face and online, and can correspond to key diversity events throughout the year (e.g. International Women’s Day, Pride month, etc).

SIGs are formed for a three-year period to gauge interest in a particular statistical topic or interest area. They work in line with the strategy of the Society, namely, to strengthen the discipline, support the profession, to promote statistical literacy and to ensure statistics are used in the public interest.

SIGs are run by a committee who oversees the planning and delivery of a programme of events. Volunteers will serve a three-year term. The SIG committee will meet at least twice per year – this will include virtual meetings.

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to help determine the strategic direction of the group and interested in organising events. We encourage members from a diverse background, especially those from underrepresented communities as we would like to be as inclusive as possible.

If you are interested, please send a cover letter explaining why you are interested with no more than 250 words. Please send your cover letters to CDSig@rss.org.uk. The deadline is Monday 6 May 2024. Please note to participate in a special interest group, you must be a fellow member of the RSS.
