Routes to achieving RSS Data Analyst
You must first be a Fellow of the RSS.
The RSS Data Analyst certification recognises early‑career professionals who can apply data analysis skills in practice, supported by appropriate training, experience and professional standards.
To achieve Data Analyst status, you must meet the requirements outlined below.
Eligibility requirements
To apply, you must be able to demonstrate that you:
- Have completed relevant data analysis training (for example, an RSS Quality Marked course or equivalent)
- Have at least one year’s work experience in a statistical or data analysis role
- Can provide evidence of recent continuing professional development (CPD) (typically 30 hours in the past 12 months)

Training and knowledge requirements
Your training should cover core concepts and methods used in data analysis.
This typically includes:
- Statistical methods for analysing data (for example, frequentist or Bayesian approaches)
- The foundations of probability and statistical reasoning
- Principles of data collection, management and curation
- The ability to work with data to generate insight and support decision‑making
Training may be gained through:
- RSS Quality Marked courses
- Equivalent professional or academic programmes

Work‑based experience
You must have at least one year of experience working with data in a professional context.
This experience should demonstrate your ability to:

Continuing professional development (CPD)
Data Analyst certification reflects current and developing capability.
To apply, you must demonstrate:
- At least 30 hours of CPD in the past 12 months
- A commitment to maintaining and developing your skills
CPD activities may include:
- Training courses or workshops
- Technical learning (e.g. tools, methods, programming)
- Conferences, seminars or webinars
- Self‑directed learning and reading
- On‑the‑job learning and reflective practice
Maintaining CPD ensures that your skills remain relevant, current and aligned with professional standards.
Professional standards and ethics
All Data Analyst applicants must demonstrate a commitment to professional conduct.
This includes:
- Awareness of the implications of data use for individuals and society
- Working with integrity and maintaining high ethical standards
- Respecting confidentiality, governance and data protection principles
- Acting in the public good when applying data analysis
All Data Analyst members commit to the RSS Code of Conduct.
Making your application
Your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet all requirements.
You will be asked to:

Assessment and award
Applications are reviewed by experienced members of RSS Professional Affairs Committee to ensure that all criteria are met.

If successful, you will be awarded RSS Data Analyst status, recognising your capability as a practising data professional.
