RSS president writes to chair of FA calling for more transparency around the use of VAR

RSS president Dr Andrew Garrett has written to the chair of the Football Association (FA) in light of the recent controversy around the use of video assistant referee (VAR) following the Tottenham vs Liverpool match on 30 September.

The letter to FA chair Debbie Hewitt highlights how statistics and statistical principles could help improve confidence in the VAR process and its implementation. It proposes collaboration between the RSS and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to help better understand confidence levels in VAR and increase trustworthiness in the process.

While the RSS is aware that some steps have been taken to demonstrate trustworthiness in VAR, Dr Andrew Garrett’s letter observes that more efforts towards greater openness and transparency would build public confidence and understanding, and the RSS would be pleased to support PGMOL in this endeavor.
