RSS fellows recognised in 2023 New Year Honours

A number of statisticians and data scientists, including RSS members have been recognised in the 2023 New Year Honours list.

Honorary fellow, Sir Michael Marmot has been awarded the Companion of Honour for his work addressing health inequalities.

RSS fellow, Professor Sharon Hutchinson, who is Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health at Glasgow Caledonian University was made CBE for services to public health research.

Professor Kanti Mardia, Senior Research Professor at the University of Leeds and founder of the RSS Mardia prize, was awarded an OBE for his services to statistical science.

Others in the statistical and data science community who were also recognised, include Pouria Hadjibagheri who received an MBE for services to data transparency during the pandemic. Pouria was the Technical and Development Lead for the UK Health Security Agency’s Coronavirus Dashboard. The team won the 2022 RSS & OSR award for Trustworthiness, Quality & Value.

Also awarded an MBE was Dr Sian Thomas, Chief Data Officer at the Department for International Trade. Professor Paul Glaister of the University of Reading and council member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) was awarded a CBE for his services to education.
