About Statistics of the Year and Statistics of the Decade
Originally launched in 2017, our Statistics of the Year initiative celebrates interesting and insightful statistics that sum up important issues from the previous 12 months.
We have a judging panel comprising eminent statisticians, journalists, economists, environmental scientists and pollsters, chaired by the RSS's vice president for external affairs, Professor Jen Rogers. The results are announced at the end of the year.
The 2019 ‘Statistics of the Year’ won a MemCom 'Best Campaign on a Shoestring' award. The judges described it as 'A very well executed campaign […] In relation to increasing media and public awareness of statistics that have real-world impact, the results have been phenomenal!'
In 2019, we also awarded Statistics of the Decade, celebrating the most incisive statistics from the 2010-19 period.
