Key statistical figures named in 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours

We are delighted to see that several RSS fellows have been recognised in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, as follows:

  • Ed Humpherson (pictured above), current director general for regulation at the UK Statistics Authority, was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath for public service
  • Fiona Steele OBE, a statistics professor at the London School of Economics, was awarded a CBE for services to statistics in the social sciences
  • David Sweeney, the executive chair at Research England, also received a CBE, for services to higher education.
  • Daniela de Angelis, professor of statistical science for health at University of Cambridge received an Honorary MBE (in the Honorary awards to foreign nationals), for services to medical research and public health. Daniela is a member of the RSS Covid-19 Task Force.

These RSS fellows joined many other data scientists and epidemiologists recognised on this year’s list for their  important contributions in areas as diverse as medical research, security and the Covid-19 response.

RSS Chief Executive, Stian Westlake, said: ‘It’s brilliant to see RSS fellows recognised this year, as well as so many other statisticians and data scientists included on the list. Once again, it reflects the importance of the work that they do, and the value that statistics brings to our day-to-day lives. Huge congratulations to everyone commemorated on this year’s list.’
