The University College London Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH) hosted a seminar and lecture celebrating the work of RSS CStat fellow and Guy Medallist in silver, Professor Harvey Goldstein, on the day of his 80th birthday - 30 October 2019.
The Catherine Peckham Symposium featured a number of RSS fellows, including Dr George Leckie, Professors Bill Browne and James Carpenter and Dr Katie Harron giving a retrospective of their work with Harvey, before he went on to give the prestigious Otto Wolff lecture.
The Otto Wolff lecture is a lecture series that showcases world-class clinical and scientific presentations, and on this occasion features the visiting Professor at ICH, visiting Professor at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Professor of Social Statistics at Bristol University.
Harvey's statistical work has, over the years, impacted on statistical methodology, education, child growth and many other areas. He has made important contributions to the statistical analysis of data on child growth and development that led to the creation of software to calculate child growth norms. His 1996 paper on league tables remains a key piece of research on the ‘metrics’ of education and he has influenced government policy in this area. Harvey's contribution to the statistical tool of multilevel modelling has also been highly influential. His book, Multilevel Statistical Models 4th Edition, 2011 has more than 10,000 citations.
Harvey has been an active member of the RSS throughout his career. He was recently joint editor of our Series A Journal, has been a member of the Society's Council twice and was awarded the Society's Guy medal in silver in 1998.
