RSS celebrates Volunteers’ Week 2019

The RSS has marked this year’s celebration of Volunteers’ Week (2-8 June 2019) by sharing our volunteers’ experiences of the work they are doing for the Society. Volunteers’ Week is the annual celebration of volunteers and the contributions they make to organisations and communities across the UK.

Read case studies of two organisations that have benefitted from our Statisticians for Society initiative.

Here is a summary of some of our volunteers’ achievements:

  • Our sections and local groups organised more than 100 events last year for the Society.
  • Our volunteers for Statisticians for Society have spent more than 1,000 hours supporting small charities.
  • Our journals volunteers have refereed over 1,000 new manuscripts, assisted in the publication of 160 papers (3860 pages), participated in six discussion paper meetings and participated in two journal paper webinars.
  • Our Statistical Ambassadors continue to support journalists who need expert help checking data or calculations, as well as providing expert comment on news programmes and in newspaper articles.
  • Our policy groups have helped us to make valuable contributions to public inquiries in areas as diverse as inflation measures, forensic science and artificial intelligence.

RSS President Deborah Ashby said: ‘The work our members do on behalf of the Society means we are able to contribute and make a positive impact in so many different ways: whether it’s engaging with the statistical community, furthering the discipline, connecting statisticians to pro bono work or influencing policy.

On behalf of the RSS, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who offers their time and expertise to support our work.’
