New RSS group to focus on stats in finance and economics

The RSS has a new interest group for members interested in how statistics can benefit the world of finance and vice versa.

The Finance and Economics Special Interest Group (SIG) will provide a cross-disciplinary forum to discuss how statistics are or could be used across finance, economics, actuarial, quantitative finance, econometrics and financial mathematics. Working with economists, actuaries and other finance professionals, the group will look at new sources of data and analytical techniques as well as identify existing shortcomings that might benefit from a cross-disciplinary approach.

The group will offer a great way for members to gain knowledge of current issues and practice in the finance sector, as well as explore how joint approaches by statisticians and economists could apply to topical interests such as pensions, cryptocurrencies and gender/ethnic pay gaps.

Robert O'Neill, chair of the SIG, said: 'We hope the group will provide a range of people interested in this area to come together, discuss ideas and hopefully collaborate on finding ways in which our various expertise can be used to improve the way statistics are used in economics and finance.'

The group welcomes new members and in the interests of gender balance, would like to hear from any female professionals working in the sector who are interested in joining the committee.

If you’d like to join the group and/or would like to suggest issues to explore, please contact SIG’s dedicated page.
