2019 Mardia Prize to support workshops on economics of mental health

We are pleased to announce the winner of the third Mardia interdisciplinary workshop prize: Dr Christoph Kronenberg (pictured).

Founded by RSS fellow Kanti Mardia, the Mardia Prize was created to fund cutting-edge interdisciplinary workshops bringing together statisticians with researchers from other scientific communities. Funding of £6,000–£8,000 is made available over two years to support these workshops.

The winning proposal came from Dr Christoph Kronenberg of CINCH – The National Research Center for Health Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Christoph plans to hold two workshops bringing together researchers interested in the empirical analysis of mental health economics, particularly early-career academics. These events will be organised in collaboration with the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, a leading centre for economic research and evidence-based policy advice in Germany.

The workshop proposal argued that empirical research related to mental health has huge potential to improve lives, and cited research commissioned by Public Health England, which shows that in the UK, for every £1 invested in mental health interventions it is possible to avert £5 of costs.
