Volunteers sought for Women in Statistics and Data Science group

The Society is seeking volunteers to join the committee of a newly-proposed special interest group for women in statistics and data science.

Special interest groups (SIGs) are formed for a three-year period to gauge interest in a particular statistical topic or interest area. They work in line with the strategy of the Society, namely: to strengthen the discipline; support the profession; to promote statistical literacy and to ensure statistics are used in the public interest.

SIGs are run by a committee who oversees the planning and delivery of a programme of events. Volunteers will serve a three-year term. The SIG committee will meet at least twice per year – this will include virtual meetings.

We are looking for female volunteers who are willing to help determine the strategic direction of the group and interested in organising events to engage women in statistics and data science.

Maria Skoularidou, who has proposed the group, said: 'Given the low average percentages of women in statistics (especially at leadership positions) I think that such a group at RSS would help to make members of our community more aware of the common professional interests, capabilities and problems of women in our field.

'Also, such a group could contribute in promoting the status of women who are already in the statistics profession.'

If you wish to express interest or discuss joining the committee, please contact Amaka Nwagbara (a.nwagbara@rss.org.uk) by Friday 18 January 2019, with a paragraph (up to 250 words) summarising your background and why you’d like to join the committee.
