Future Leader profile: Zara Ghodsi

Position: Associate Director and Biostatistics Lead at Pfizer, specialising in immunology and inflammation

My career in data began with a strong foundation in genetics, where I was frequently exposed to vast datasets. With a passion for biometrics and statistical science, I contribute to creating innovative therapies for patients, constantly seeking better solutions to complex challenges in healthcare.

Education: PhD, focused on novel statistical approaches for studying gene expression profiles

The rigorous training and research during my PhD equipped me with a deep understanding of statistical models and their application in biological contexts.

Leadership Philosophy: Leadership is fundamentally about problem-solving and the ability to guide and support others

A true leader not only directs but also empowers team members, fostering an environment where everyone can contribute their strengths and grow. Leadership, in essence, is creating a space where problems are tackled collaboratively.

Role models: Those dedicated to educating younger generations, for example, John Green

What stands out most about Green is his ability to explain complex concepts in simple, accessible language. Green’s dedication to education and his method of simplifying the intricate have inspired me to adopt a similar mindset in my own work and interactions, valuing clarity, curiosity, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Advice to aspiring statisticians: Invest time in understanding statistical methodologies; deeply understand the question or problem you're addressing; and lastly, never hesitate to seek help

First and foremost, it’s essential not to view statistical models as some form of magic or a mysterious black box. Instead, strive to grasp the underlying mechanics and principles. Equally, no one knows everything. Collaboration and learning from others are not just beneficial but necessary for growth and success.

Childhood ambition: To make a meaningful difference in people's lives

I realised I wanted to impact lives on a global scale. Today, my dream job aligns closely with those early aspirations, and I have the tools, knowledge, and position to make that dream a reality on a much larger scale. My passion for utilising data and statistical science has become the vehicle through which I aim to discover breakthrough therapies.

Hobbies: Going for walks in nature, with a cup of coffee and an audiobook for company
