First talk in the 2026  Autumn Seminar series. This is a hybrid event.

Joining instructions will be sent once registered.

Ed Humpherson, Head of the  UK’s Office for Statistics Regulation, will talk about:
“What the official statistics system across the UK can learn from statistics in Northern Ireland”
Ed Humpherson will consider the current challenges facing official statistics in the UK, including misinformation, resource constraints, deteriorating quality and growing demand for real-time statistics and data. He will show how, for these challenges, there are things that the rest of the UK can learn from the Northern Ireland approach to official statistics. He will also highlight areas of common challenge. A recurring theme will be the benefits of openness and humility in the production and communication of official statistics and data.

All welcome!

Ed Humpherson, Office of Statistical Regulation.

Ed is a regular visitor to Northern Ireland, and works closely with the NISRA (the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency). He is the architect of the UK’s principles of Trustworthiness, Quality and Value, and is a champion of appropriate use of statistics in public debate – often associated with high profile interventions that support statistics, and the statisticians that use them, in contested political debates. He will bring this experience to bear in the talk.
