As technology and society continue to evolve, statisticians, data scientists, and decision makers need to stay informed about the what data is created, how it is created, and where it is available. Following previous sessions on open science and reproducibility, we are delighted to host an afternoon with Tom Forth, Head of Data at Open Innovations. Tom will share with us how Open Innovations have gathered and work with datasets outside of the public sector and academia. In particular, he will talk about the power of Open Street Map, Open Bus Tracking, Teacher Tapp, The Data City, and the Leeds Bins app.

Eight years of Open Innovations at Leeds
Tom Forth from Open Innovations will share how Open Innovations have gathered new datasets and worked with them successfully outside of the public sector and academia. In particular he will talk about the power of Open Street Map, Open Bus Tracking, Teacher Tapp, The Data City, and the Leeds Bins app. He will share the challenges Open Innovations have faced and how they have been almost unique as a new Northern data institution in overcoming them where many similar organisations have failed. Lastly, Tom will share his opinion on where the existing data and statistical infrastructure and institutions of the UK hold us back and how we can overcome those constraints and continue to do better.

Tom Forth is the Chief Technical Officer and co-Founder of Data City, Founder of imactivate, and Head of Data at Open Innovations. He has a Ph.D in the Systems Biology of Malaria from the University of Leeds, and has tirelessly work " to make real objects digitally active" since starting companies back in 2013.
You can find Tom on Twitter at @thomasforth and Open Innovations at @OpenInnovates, or learn more about Tom from his website.
The event is co-organised by Min Yong and Ciarán McInerney for the RSS Leeds/Bradford Local Group. If you have any questions, please contact us.
