Blaise Egan is passionate about the power of statistical science and evidence-based policy to do good. In a long career with telecoms supplier BT he acquired a wide experience of tackling statistical problems. He is approachable and straightforward. He is concerned to identify the right problem and tackle it using appropriate tools.
Blaise Egan worked in a variety of roles in BT until his retirement in December 2024. His statistical skills were much in demand and for much of his career he acted as a one-man statistical consultancy, working across the BT group of companies. His work was mainly advising engineers, but he also did work for Group HR, Group Legal as well as high-impact work for Group Finance. For the last 12 years he was a tutor on Research Department's AI and Data Science course. He has a degree in mathematics from Queen Mary College, Univerity of London (1978), an MSc in Statistical Applications in Business and Government from University of Westminster (1993) and an MPhil in statistics entitled Tree Models: A Bayesian Perspective (2007). His research work on telecare (remote systems that look after a frail person living alone) earned him a US patent.
