SOTD shortlisted for ‘Best campaign on a shoestring' award

The RSS ‘Statistics of the Decade’ (SOTD) initiative has been shortlisted for the ‘Best campaign on a shoestring’ prize at this year’s Memcom awards, which celebrate achievement by professional bodies and associations in the not-for-profit sector.

SOTD was entered for the award after generating an impressive amount of news coverage, in addition to the exposure already garnered by the Society's Statistics of the Year 2019. The overall media coverage included:

  • A quiz based on the best SOTY/D entries published in the Times across 1.5 pages
  • Articles in the Financial Times (front page), Guardian, Sun, i, Yorkshire Post and Mail on Sunday
  • Coverage in BBC Radio 4’s Today programme and RSS vice president Jen Rogers being interviewed on the BBC News Channel and CNBC
  • News reports on Fox News, CNN, Newsweek and Bloomberg.

The coverage was welcomed at the time by several SOTY/D judges. ‘This is so impressive! I hadn’t realised what take-up there had been,’ commented Sir David Spiegelhalter, past RSS president and who chaired the judging panel for SOTY in 2017 and 2018.

The Memcom award winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on Thursday 4 June 2020.

The ‘Best Campaign on a shoestring’ award has been won by the RSS for the last two years; the first for our pre-release access initiative and secondly, for our 2018 Statistics of the Year.
